Suvarnabhumi postpones elevated roadworks after backlash

Suvarnabhumi Airport has postponed planned repair and maintenance work on expansion joints along the elevated road serving the passenger terminal following widespread criticism over potential disruption during the tourism high season.

The airport announced on Wednesday that the work, originally scheduled to run from August 31, 2026, to April 7, 2027, would be delayed while officials reviewed the timing.

Suvarnabhumi said the original schedule overlapped with the high season, when passenger numbers and traffic entering and leaving the airport were expected to increase. It therefore decided to revise the implementation period to minimise disruption and provide greater convenience for passengers and other airport users.

No lane closures or diversions from August 31

Under the revised arrangement, the airport will not introduce the previously announced lane closures or traffic diversions on the elevated access road from August 31.

Passengers and other users will be able to travel to and from the terminal as normal.

The airport will consider a new period for the maintenance work and announce further details once the revised schedule has been finalised. It apologised for any inconvenience caused by the change.

Airport reverses decision after criticism

The postponement came after Suvarnabhumi Airport announced earlier on Wednesday that traffic on the elevated road would be diverted from August 31 for about eight months.

The announcement prompted strong criticism on social media, particularly over the decision to carry out major roadworks during a period overlapping with the tourism high season, when the airport is typically busier.

Suvarnabhumi Airport subsequently said it had taken the public’s concerns into account and decided to postpone the work until a more suitable period could be identified.
